In 2018 the National Gallery of Victoria held its Triennial showcase of contemporary art from around the world, and for this internationally significant event Chunky Move collaborated with NGV to create an exclusive series of works in which dance engaged in dialogue with the works of the exhibition.
Accumulation was an ambitious and acclaimed choreographic takeover of NGV Triennial.
Curated by Chunky Move Artistic Director Anouk van Dijk, Accumulation presented five individual works created by choreographers including Van Dijk, Antony Hamilton, Thomas E.S. Kelly and Prue Lang in response to selected art works from the exhibition. Audiences were guided from performance to performance by artist Benjamin Hancock, giving them a unique experience of the Triennial exhibition through dance.

WRITING
"As Benjamin Hancock appears, his face also concealed, I think how wonderful it would be to move through the space, face hidden by a mask but still able to see, as I face mortality. Encased from feathered headpiece to heel, Hancock serves as the adult version of the Artie Mouse[ii] gallery guide of my childhood: silent, otherworldly, and with a different silhouette to my own; I’d follow them near anywhere."

CHUNKY MOVE - Assembly

With over sixty performers on a vast staircase on the Melbourne Recital Centre stage, Assembly was about crowds, a demonstration of mass action in both movement and voice. As striking patterns evolve from chaotic rabbles, musical harmony emerges from dissonant voices.
Combining the force and agility of Chunky Move’s dancers with the aural majesty of the Victorian Opera, Assembly’s action shifted between mesmeric visualisations of kaleidoscopic order and the unpredictable convulsions of a fomenting mob. Assembly the last work Artistic Director Gideon Obarzanek created for Chunky Move before passing on the reins to his successor, and its scale and size were appropriate for the Melbourne dance landscape he had helped build.
